🧠The Successor
The Pedagogy The teaching practice we want to keep. Self-directed study, the divisional structure, narrative evaluation, the committee model, project-based assessment. Document what worked, examine what didn’t, and propose how it can live in a new vehicle. Land & Place The 800 acres, the buildings, the farm, the relationship to the place. What happens to the land matters as much as what happens to the pedagogy. Land trust questions, conservation questions, indigenous land relationships, and adjacent-use possibilities live here. Governance & Legal The legal vehicle question. Nonprofit structure, board composition, member governance, accreditation pathways, IP and brand stewardship. Dry but load-bearing. Open Questions The questions we haven’t answered and don’t yet know how to. Park them here so they don’t get lost between working groups. The Model The shape of the thing. Is the successor a college, a school, a network, a fellowship, a residency, a series of cohorts, a land trust with programming, something we don’t have a word for yet? This is where competing models get sketched and stress-tested. Curriculum & Concentrations Concentrations, fields, and the actual content of what would get studied. Useful for capturing faculty wisdom about what subjects Hampshire was distinctive at — and what the next iteration should foreground. Values & Orientation What we stand for, in writing. Decolonial commitments, pedagogical principles, who the successor is for. The values document is upstream of every other decision in this category. Business Model No margin, no mission.
